What does "accredited" actually mean?

Accreditation means an independent body has reviewed a course against a published set of quality standards and approved it. It is the difference between a certificate a school printed for itself and one that an outside authority stands behind. In TEFL there are several levels of it, and they are not equal.

The strongest level is government regulation. In England, qualifications are regulated by Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation. An Ofqual regulated Level 5 TEFL qualification sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework at the same level as a foundation degree or higher national diploma, and it appears on a public government register that anyone can search. Below that sit independent accreditation bodies, university affiliations, and finally providers that simply accredit themselves, which carries the least weight.

This matters because employers and immigration authorities increasingly check. Recruiters in Asia, the Gulf, and Europe verify qualification status, and several countries specify a "Level 5 or equivalent" qualification for work visa eligibility in teaching roles. A certificate from an unregulated provider can be quietly rejected, so accreditation is not a badge, it is what makes a certificate usable.

Why accreditation matters more than ever

Accreditation has moved from a nice to have to the thing that decides whether a certificate works. Three shifts have made it decisive.

Employers and visa offices now verify. Recruiters across Asia, the Gulf, and Europe routinely check qualification status, and several governments specify a regulated Level 5 or equivalent qualification for teaching visas. An unregulated certificate is the single most common reason a teaching application is quietly turned down.

AI has flooded the market. It has never been easier to produce a cheap, official looking certificate, which makes an independently regulated qualification the clearest way to prove yours is genuine. When anyone can generate a certificate, the value moves to the ones a government register can confirm.

The field is professionalizing. Teaching English is now a career rather than a gap year, and nearly one in five new teachers arrives from another profession. As standards rise, a regulated Level 5 qualification is increasingly the baseline that employers expect rather than a bonus.

Where this is heading

Every signal points the same way. Visa rules in the UK, Australia, and Canada are tightening, and accredited qualifications strengthen an application rather than weaken it. National English programs, from Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 outward, are hiring at scale and want qualified, verifiable teachers. And as AI takes over the routine parts of the classroom, the human skills that remain will need to be backed by a credential that stands up to scrutiny. How to spot the best accredited TEFL certification

If you are comparing courses, judge the accreditation, not the marketing. A genuinely well accredited TEFL certification does all of the following, and Premier TEFL's Level 5 Diploma does every one:

• It is government regulated. Look for Ofqual regulation and a Level 5 rating, not a vague "internationally accredited" claim.
• You can verify it on a public register. If you cannot find the qualification on the accrediting body's own site, treat the claim with caution.
• It is at least 120 hours. This is the widely accepted minimum, and Level 5 diplomas go well beyond it.
• It is recognized where you want to teach. Ofqual and EQF Level 5 recognition is accepted across Asia, the Gulf, and Europe.
• The provider names its awarding body. We name Highfield and link the register. Self accredited only certificates name no one.
