Teach English in Dubai and the UAE: Salary, Visa and Requirements

How to teach English in Dubai and the UAE: real 2026 international school pay, licensing, visa steps, hiring season and whether a TEFL is enough.
Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai at sunrise, where many international schools hire English teachers

To teach English in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE you need a bachelor's degree, a UAE teaching license and an employer sponsored residence visa. International schools advertised AED 10,000 to 20,000 a month tax free in 2026, about $2,720 to $5,450, usually plus housing and flights. A TEFL on its own suits language centers rather than schools.

This guide sits within our wider guide to teaching English in the Middle East. It covers what UAE schools actually ask for, real 2026 pay offers, licensing, the visa process and how to get hired in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Key takeaways

  • Abu Dhabi international schools advertised AED 10,000 to 13,000 a month for English teachers in 2026, including fixed allowances, with housing allowance, flights and free school places on top.
  • A Dubai British curriculum school advertised up to AED 20,000 a month plus a AED 6,000 housing allowance for 2026 to 2027.
  • Since 2021, all teachers in UAE public and private schools have needed a license through the Ministry of Education's Teacher Licensing System.
  • Most school listings ask for an education or English degree and a teaching qualification, not just a TEFL.
  • The UAE dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 to the US dollar, so salaries convert predictably.

Can you teach English in Dubai and the UAE?

You can teach English in Dubai and the UAE if you have a bachelor's degree, the qualifications to hold a UAE teaching license, and an employer willing to sponsor your residence visa. The UAE is one of the most demanding TEFL markets in the world: schools hire qualified teachers rather than travelers, and the paperwork is checked carefully. In return, salaries are tax free and packages usually include housing support and flights.

There are two very different routes. Schools, whether international, private or charter, hire licensed teachers with an education or subject degree. Language centers, tutoring companies and some English as an additional language (EAL) or bilingual roles are where a TEFL certificate carries the most weight. Knowing which route you are on saves months of applications.

How much do English teachers earn in Dubai and the UAE?

English teachers in UAE international schools typically earn AED 10,000 to 20,000 a month tax free, about $2,720 to $5,450, based on 2026 listings. An American curriculum international school in Abu Dhabi advertised AED 12,000 to 13,000 a month for an August 2026 start, including fixed allowances, plus an accommodation allowance paid twice a year, a flight allowance and a free school place for a teacher's child. Another Abu Dhabi school offered AED 10,000 to 12,000 for middle and high school English.

Dubai's better established schools pay more. A British curriculum school recruiting for 2026 to 2027 advertised up to AED 20,000 a month, with a separate AED 6,000 housing allowance, airfare and tuition concessions for teachers' children. Because the UAE has no personal income tax, these figures are close to what you take home, though rent in Dubai is high if housing is not covered.

Do you need a teaching license to teach in the UAE?

Yes. Since 2021, every teacher, principal and vice principal in UAE public and private schools has needed a license under the Ministry of Education's Teacher Licensing System, according to the Khaleej Times. The system was developed with the emirates' education regulators, and the 2026 school listings we reviewed reflect it: they ask for a bachelor's degree in education or English, or a relevant teaching qualification.

Which body approves your appointment depends on the emirate and the type of school. Your school's HR team will normally guide you through registration, but it helps to know who regulates your future employer.

Who regulates schools in the UAE
Emirate or school type Regulator
Dubai private schools Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA)
Abu Dhabi schools Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK)
Sharjah private schools Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA)
Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and government schools Ministry of Education

How does the UAE work visa process work?

Passport and travel documents being checked for a UAE work visa application

Your employer sponsors your UAE residence visa, and the process runs in stages. After you accept an offer, you gather your degree, teaching qualifications and police check, and have them attested: usually notarized and verified in your home country, then legalized by the UAE embassy and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once you arrive, you complete a medical examination, receive an Emirates ID and get your residence visa.

Attestation is the step that most often delays new teachers, so start it as soon as you begin applying rather than after an offer. Your school will tell you exactly which documents it needs, and its HR team usually handles the visa application itself.

When do UAE schools hire English teachers?

UAE schools hire mainly for an August or September start, and the 2026 international school listings we reviewed closed between April and June. Some schools also recruit for January starts mid-year, and language centers hire year round. Having your documents attested and your references ready by early spring puts you in the strongest position.

Can you teach in the UAE with just a TEFL certificate?

You can find some English teaching work in the UAE with a degree and a TEFL certificate, mainly at private language centers, tutoring companies and in some bilingual or EAL support roles. Most school jobs, however, require a teaching license, which in turn needs an education degree or a recognized teaching qualification such as a PGCE. A Level 5 TEFL diploma strengthens a language center application and is a solid foundation for teachers planning to move into schools.

Non-native English speakers are hired in the UAE, but schools often ask for proof of English level, and one 2026 Abu Dhabi listing preferred an IELTS certificate for non-native applicants. Our guide to the best TEFL certification for teaching in the Middle East compares the options in more detail.

How much does it cost to rent in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah?

Rent is the biggest cost for UAE teachers whose package does not include housing, and it varies hugely by area. Property Finder data for June 2026 put average advertised rents for a one bedroom apartment at about AED 60,000 a year in Deira and Dubai South and AED 65,000 in Karama, roughly AED 5,000 to AED 5,400 a month. A 2026 listings analysis from the property firm Binayah found Al Nahda the cheapest Dubai area at AED 55,000 a year, while Downtown Dubai averaged AED 135,000.

That makes the housing allowance worth checking line by line. The AED 6,000 a month allowance in one 2026 Dubai listing would cover a one bedroom in Dubai's more affordable areas, but not in Downtown or the Marina. Sharjah is cheaper again: Bayut put average asking rents in Muwaileh Commercial at about AED 40,800 a year in 2026, which is why some Dubai teachers commute from there. In Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Real Estate Centre froze residential rents in June 2026, according to AGBI, after a period of steep rises.

Average advertised one bedroom rents in the UAE (2026)
Area Annual rent About per month Source
Al Nahda, Dubai AED 55,000 AED 4,583 Binayah
Deira or Dubai South, Dubai AED 60,000 AED 5,000 Property Finder, June 2026
Karama, Dubai AED 65,000 AED 5,417 Property Finder, June 2026
Downtown Dubai AED 135,000 AED 11,250 Binayah
Muwaileh Commercial, Sharjah AED 40,800 AED 3,400 Bayut, 2026

UAE landlords often ask for a year's rent up front or in a small number of post dated checks, so ask your school whether it can advance part of your housing allowance when you arrive.

What is end of service gratuity in the UAE?

End of service gratuity is a lump sum your UAE employer must pay when your contract ends, once you have completed at least one year of service. Under the 2021 UAE labor law it is 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after that, capped at two years' pay, and it must be paid within 14 days of the contract ending. On a two year contract with a basic salary of AED 8,000, that comes to about AED 11,200, roughly $3,050.

Because gratuity is calculated on basic salary only, ask how your package is split between basic pay and allowances before you sign. Our guide to teaching English in the Middle East compares gratuity rules in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Should you teach in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Dubai skyline at night, home to KHDA regulated private schools that employ English teachers

Dubai offers the largest number of private schools and the highest advertised packages, but also the highest rents, so a housing allowance matters. Abu Dhabi has a large international and charter school sector and many schools that include accommodation support. Sharjah and the northern emirates are generally cheaper places to live, with smaller job markets. Many teachers start where they get the best package and move later.

Before signing a contract, check your own government's latest guidance: the US State Department UAE travel advisory and the UK government's UAE travel advice are both updated regularly. If you are comparing Gulf countries, our guide to teaching English in Saudi Arabia covers the next biggest market.

How do you get started teaching English in the UAE?

Start by deciding whether you are aiming for schools or language centers, because the requirements are different. For schools, focus on your degree, teaching qualification and license eligibility. For language centers, a strong TEFL qualification and some classroom experience make the difference. In both cases, begin document attestation early and apply in the spring for an August start.
