Dani! Wow you’re in Kurdistan, tell us about what’s taken you there?
I am here to deliver a TESOL Training Course.
What was the most exciting/interesting thing you noticed during this trip?
Meeting so many amazing people and visiting amazing parts of the city, Erbil. Eating fresh mountain honeycomb was definitely a plus point.
What have been some of the most formidable challenges you’ve faced when teaching abroad throughout your career? How did you overcome them—any advice for our readers?
I think delivering teacher training in China was one of the hardest challenges. I don’t speak a word of Chinese and even using body language and gestures I found it hard to make myself understood! In the end, I used a pen and paper and managed to order what I wanted to eat using the power of visuals!!
What does a typical day in the life of Dani in Kurdistan look like? Give us a brief runthrough ?
Morning:
Amazing breakfast of fresh warm bread, yoghurt, olives, the most amazing tahini and date syrup. Then onto training….
Afternoon:
Training sessions and yet again more food! A lot of rice and soup based dishes and of course ten minutes stood outside soaking up the vitamin d with beautiful sunshine.
Evening:
A rest and more food! There is a vast array of amazing cuisines here, but the local food is divine.
In your opinion, what has been the most unexpected thing about the local culture?
The chaos on the roads!
If you could go back in time to your first day of teaching, what advice would you give yourself?
Relax more and have confidence in your own ability!
What’s next on the cards for you Dani?
So, back to Birmingham to spend New Years with my family. Then I will be delivering a superb Premier TEFL EAL course for teachers and then off to Pakistan for specialised teacher training. Let’s see what the rest of 2020 brings!
Thank you for taking the time to share your magnificent Kurdistan story with the Premier TEFL community. Happy travels!
