Turkey is cheap to live in and getting more expensive fast, which sounds contradictory until you look at the numbers. Annual inflation was 31.51 percent in August 2026 according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. Your rent is legally capped against that figure. Your salary is not, which is why the currency you are paid in matters more than the number on your contract.
Key takeaways
- Turkish annual consumer price inflation stood at 31.51 percent in August 2026, the third consecutive monthly fall.
- Residential rent increases are capped by law at the 12-month average CPI, which was 31.79 percent for leases renewed in September 2026.
- Housing and utilities inflation ran at 39.77 percent annually, ahead of the headline rate.
- Ask to be paid in US dollars or euros if you can. A lira salary loses purchasing power between contract signing and your second year.
- A teacher on 800 to 1,500 US dollars a month lives comfortably outside Istanbul and tightly inside it.
- The independent Inflation Research Group put August inflation at 49.03 percent, well above the official figure. Budget for the higher number.
How much does it cost to live in Turkey?

We give these figures in US dollars rather than lira on purpose. Lira prices in a guide like this are out of date within months, and a reader comparing Turkey to Vietnam or Spain needs a common unit anyway. Treat everything below as an approximate monthly equivalent that moves with the exchange rate.
| Cost | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, one bedroom | 250 to 600 | Many academies include or subsidize housing, which changes the whole picture |
| Utilities and internet | 60 to 130 | Heating pushes winter bills up sharply in Ankara and the east |
| Groceries | 150 to 250 | Local markets are markedly cheaper than supermarkets |
| Transport | 20 to 40 | Monthly public transport passes, cheap by European standards |
| Eating out and social | 100 to 250 | Depends entirely on whether you drink, which is taxed heavily |
On a typical academy salary of 800 to 1,500 US dollars a month, as set out in our guide to teaching English in Turkey, that leaves most teachers comfortable outside Istanbul and breaking roughly even inside it once rent is paid.
Why is the inflation rate the number that matters?
Because it decides what happens to your money in year two, and most teachers only think about year one.
The Turkish Statistical Institute put annual consumer inflation at 31.51 percent in August 2026, down from 31.75 percent in July and falling for a third consecutive month. That is genuine improvement. It is still a rate at which prices roughly double every two and a half years.
The breakdown matters more than the headline. Housing and utilities ran at 39.77 percent annually, food and non-alcoholic beverages at 33.79 percent, and transport at 35.08 percent. Those three are most of a teacher's budget, and all three are rising faster than the headline figure suggests.
There is also a second set of numbers. The independent Inflation Research Group, known as ENAG, calculated annual inflation at 49.03 percent for the same month. ENAG is not the official statistics body and its figure should not be confused with the government one, but the gap between them is wide enough that budgeting on the higher number is the safer choice.
How much can your landlord raise the rent?
This is the part that genuinely protects you, and almost no teacher arrives knowing it.
Under the Turkish Code of Obligations No. 6098, residential rent increases at contract renewal cannot exceed the 12-month average consumer price index. For leases renewed in September 2026 that ceiling was 31.79 percent. Any clause in your contract setting a higher figure is invalid.
So your rent will rise every year, substantially, but it cannot rise arbitrarily. If a landlord demands more than the published ceiling, they are asking for something the law does not allow. Check the current rate for the month your lease renews, because the ceiling moves monthly with the index.
Should you be paid in lira or dollars?

Dollars or euros, if the school will do it. Plenty will, particularly the larger Istanbul academies and anything corporate.
The reason is simple arithmetic. A lira salary that felt generous in September is worth noticeably less by the following September unless the school raises it by the full inflation rate, and most do not. A dollar denominated salary holds its value against the things you buy abroad, including any student loan or savings target back home.
If the school insists on lira, negotiate a written annual review tied to the official inflation rate rather than a vague promise. Ask in the interview, not after you arrive. It is a normal question in Turkey and nobody will be offended by it.
What does that mean for saving?

Turkey is a live-well country rather than a save-hard one. Teachers who bank money here usually do it through one of three routes: subsidized accommodation from the school, private tutoring on the side, or a post outside Istanbul where rent is half what the big city charges.
Private tutoring is common and lucrative, but check your contract and your permit terms before taking it on. Work permits in Turkey are employer specific, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security is clear about the consequences of working outside your permit.
Our comparison of public and private school teaching in Turkey covers which route tends to include housing, and the TEFL salary report puts Turkish pay next to thirty other countries.
Does a better qualification change the maths?
Cost of Living in Turkey for English Teachers
It changes which salary band you are negotiating from, which matters far more in a high inflation economy than in a stable one. The 120 hour Online TEFL Course gets you into academy work. The 180 Hour Level 5 TEFL Diploma, regulated by Ofqual under reference 610/1572/6 and awarded by Highfield Qualifications, is what moves you toward the corporate and international school roles where dollar salaries are normal. You can verify any regulated qualification on the UK government register.
Plan your move to Turkey
Turkey rewards teachers who ask blunt questions before signing: what currency, what annual review, is housing included, and who pays the permit. Get those four answered and the cost of living takes care of itself. Browse the full range on our accredited TEFL courses page.
