The TEFL prompt library (copy and paste)
The difference between mediocre and excellent AI output is context: level, age, L1, class size, timing and format. These prompts are templates — replace the bracketed variables.
1. Full lesson plan
Act as an experienced TEFL teacher trainer. Create a 60-minute lesson plan for [CEFR B1] adult learners whose first language is [Spanish]. Topic: [ordering food in a restaurant]. Use a PPP structure (presentation, practice, production) with timings, teacher and student actions, anticipated errors (including L1 interference), and a backup activity. Class size: [8], format: [online, one screen].
2. Materials adaptation (levelling)
Rewrite the following text for [CEFR A2] learners. Keep the key facts. Sentence length under 12 words where possible, high-frequency vocabulary only, and gloss any word above A2 with a short definition in brackets. Then create 5 comprehension questions: 2 literal, 2 inferential, 1 opinion. Text: [paste].
3. Grammar drill generator
Create a 10-item controlled practice exercise on [present perfect vs past simple] for [B1] teenagers. Context: [travel experiences]. Format: gap-fill with two options per gap. Include an answer key with a one-line explanation for each answer explaining why the alternative is wrong.
4. Error correction with student-friendly feedback
Here is a piece of writing from a [B1] learner, L1 [Mandarin]. Identify the 5 most important errors (not every error). For each: quote the error, give the correction, and write a one-sentence explanation the student can understand at their level. End with two things the student did well. Text: [paste].
5. Speaking role-play scripts
Write a role-play card pair for [A2] adults practising [checking into a hotel]. Card A: guest, with a complication [the booking is missing]. Card B: receptionist. Each card: situation, goal, 5 useful phrases at level, and one polite complaint structure. Keep each card under 120 words.
6. IELTS-style feedback
Assess this IELTS Writing Task 2 response against the four public band descriptors (task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy). Give an estimated band for each criterion with one supporting example from the text, then three prioritised improvements. Note that this is an estimate, not an official score. Essay: [paste].

7. Vocabulary recycling
Here are the 12 target words my [A2] class learned this week: [list]. Create a 10-minute review game for an online class: a warm-up (2 min), a categorising task (4 min), and a personalised speaking task where each student uses at least 3 words (4 min). Include exact teacher instructions.
Three classroom workflows
Before class: planning and materials (15 minutes, not 90)

Use AI without losing the classroom
Four rules experienced teachers follow:
- AI drafts, you decide. Language models still produce plausible-but-wrong grammar explanations and off-level texts. Everything student-facing gets a teacher pass first.
- Never paste identifiable student data into general-purpose chatbots. Anonymise work before requesting feedback, and check your school's data policy teacher AI training exists in only about half of districts (RAND summary).
- Design for a post-AI classroom, not against it. With 62% of students using AI for homework (RAND), move assessed production into class time live speaking, in-class writing, and treat AI-assisted homework as practice, not proof.
- Spend the saved time on humans. Gallup's 5.9 saved hours are only a win if they go into feedback conversations, rapport and speaking practice the things AI cannot do (Gallup).
