Overview

Teach English abroad in Colombia, a nation born of diversity. Fabulous, tasty diversity. The Spanish conquistadors influence extends from the customs, the architecture, and yes—the food. The indigenous Amerindian cultures, and the country’s proximity to the Caribbean islands has also influenced the melting pot that is Colombian culture.

Prepare to share your English skills in the classroom and celebrate your successes over tasty patacones con hogao (fried plantain with salty sauce) with new amigos.

No country on earth is more geographically blessed than Colombia, with its mountainous peaks, lush jungles, miles of coast, and wildlife-rich rain forest. As an ESL teacher in Colombia you will have the feeling that you’ve landed in paradise in no time.

Colombians are known around the world for their laid back, outgoing, and friendly nature. They’ll be keen to learn everything about you. Join us next semester!

Getting there

Travel to El Dorado International Airport (BOG) on your specific internship arrival day, for airport pick up and transfers to Zipaquirá for orientation.

Day 2-14

Orientation

Full two week long orientation to learn about Colombia culture and training sessions to prepare you to be confident in the classroom. You’ll learn a few local phrases and discover true Colombian hospitality.

At the end of the orientation you’ll travel by bus to your homestay location in the urban areas of Zipaquirá city.

Day 15-182

Your teaching experience

It’s time to get into the classroom! You’ll be confident after already completing 120 hours of certified teacher training plus the workshops during orientation.

You will work in an English language academy Monday to Friday, with one Saturday per month. Students are aged six to adult, with mixed English ability, giving you an incredible first-time teaching experience. You can expect around 30 hours of hands-on teaching per week, plus some time to plan lessons following the in-house curriculum.

Your goal will be focused on conversational English practice, helping your eager students to feel confident as they develop their skills for better job opportunities or access to improved education. You’ll be able to ask advice from local teaching colleagues but don’t forget to bring your own creativity and ideas into the classroom, this is your chance to shine!

On weekends off and your salary to enjoy, you will have a long list of sightseeing and travel plans. Relax and enjoy the Salt Mine tour to discover the underground cathedral, find the best local street food to try out, and make it to a night of Colombian traditional singing and dancing. Prepare to check off a few amazing bucket list items!

Day 183
