Module One: Principles of Teaching English Grammar

You know how to use English grammar innately, but we’ll teach you the terminology and how to pass it on.

By the end of this module, you’ll know your present continuous from your present simple tense no problem. Most of all, you’ll be familiar and confident with grammatical terms. This module will improve your understanding of basic grammar and give you the knowledge you’ll need to communicate complicated language rules to your students. We know that grammar can be intimidating for new teachers – it won’t be at the end of module 1!

Guided learning: 30 hrs

Did you know that there are around 171,000 words in the English language? Don’t worry, you’ll only be asked to teach a few hundred of those! You’ll study the tools to teach vocabulary and use them effectively so that your students can use it in the right context.  These include; how to integrate dictionary use, designing tests for vocab learning and strategies to maintain vocabulary usage, in other words, finding settings to practice learned language in. When you complete module three, you’ll know the most commonly used methods of teaching English as a foreign language.

Guided learning: 15 hrs

Modules Four-Six:

Module Four: How to Teach Reading & Listening Skills

These are called ‘receptive skills’ because the student is receiving language. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know the most effective ways to engage students in reading English and how to comprehend what they listen to accurately. This includes setting listening tasks to music, radio and recordings, to skimming and scanning letters, emails, Facebook posts both inside and outside the classroom. We’ll also give your strategies to help students self-correct their own work – which every busy teacher needs!

Guided learning: 18 hrs

Module Six: How to Teach Pronunciation & Phonology

Help your students speak English confidently by practicing pronunciation. This is the primary reason that they want to learn English from you. As a native speaker pronouncing a word like ‘enough’ is simple for you, not so with many other nationalities. But how do you help students whose mother tongue doesn’t even have sounds that can be found in the English language? We’ll show you that. By the end of this module you’ll have mastered modern techniques to help your students sound as fluent as possible. They will converse with the pronunciation that you have taught them with assurance and that’s always a good feeling for you as their teacher!

This will make your job as a creative teacher much simpler and will help you create compelling, relevant and useful lessons either online or in the classroom.

Guided learning: 17 hrs

Questions and Answers

What does TEFL stand for?

TEFL is the acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

What is the difference between TEFL/TESOL/CELTA?

TEFL – ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language’ certificate, is the most commonly accepted certificate worldwide. This certificate allows you to teach English to non-native speakers across the globe.

TESOL – ‘Teaching English as a Second Language’ aka TESL. Similar to TESOL students, as a TESL teacher, you would likely be teaching English in your home country to students who have moved or live in an English speaking country. In other words, they are continuously surrounded by the language and will be using it everyday outside of the classroom, unlike TEFL students who are likely learning in their home country.

CELTA – Known as the ‘Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults’ is a very prestigious certification. In order to receive a CELTA, you must complete a 120-hour course along with six hours of observed teaching practice with real ESL students. The majority of CELTA programs are held over four weeks and are full time. However, you may be able to find some courses that are part-time and are spread out over three months. The CELTA program must follow a strict regulation created by Cambridge University.

Which is better TEFL or CELTA?

CELTA is designed specifically for teaching adults. For budding English teachers planning to teach younger learners, an alternative TEFL qualification may be more suitable.

Nowadays, it’s possible to gain an online Level 5 TEFL qualification which is an equivalent academic level to a CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL.

CELTA courses are typically delivered over a four week period in a full-time classroom setting and include 6 hours of observed teaching practice. This hands-on training will be appealing to many trainee teachers by comparison to self-study online.

Do I need a bachelor’s degree to do a TEFL course?

No, you do not need a degree to take a TEFL course or get hired as an English teacher. This is a common misconception. The core requirement to undertake a TEFL qualification is a native level of English fluency.

In certain countries, a degree is required to obtain the correct work visa, in order for you to work there legally. Employers worldwide can also state a preference for degree-holding applicants. If you feel suitable for a role, however, do not hold a degree it is still worthwhile applying for these jobs as you may be interviewed based on the strength of your overall profile.

What TEFL certificate is best?

There are many factors that will determine the best TEFL course to suit your personal needs. There is no definitive one-size-fits-all answer to this question, and in truth, there are many excellent TEFL training providers to pick from.

When searching for your perfect match training provider, consider the following when making up your mind: online review scores, alumni testimonials, accreditation, range of courses on offer, job supports, personal experiences, and friendliness of the staff.

Are online TEFL courses worth it?

Yes, online TEFL courses are absolutely worth your time and money – once you choose a reputable training provider to study with. Online TEFL courses have been around since the early 1990s and in a time when you can earn an entire degree online, there is plenty of merit in self-study TEFL training.

Boost your teaching job opportunities by completing a Level 5 TEFL qualification; a teaching award that is available to take online and is an academic equivalent to CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL.

Can you fail a Level 5 TEFL course?

Yes, you can fail a Level 5 TEFL qualification. Once your assessment is complete it will be marked by your academic tutor. You will receive two opportunities to re-submit any answers that have been marked as incorrect. If, after your third attempt, you still have not passed your assessment questions successfully, your coursework will be marked as a fail.

These courses are equivalent to CELTA and require a good amount of commitment from trainee TEFL teachers. Supports are available to help you during the assessment and reassessment process, on the journey to achieving a prestigious teaching award.

How long does it take to complete a Level 5 TEFL course?

Typically it takes around 7 – 11 weeks to complete a Level 5 TEFL course, depending on how much free time you have to study. You will have 6 months of study time from the day that you enroll and can add more time if you run out.

As a self-guided course, you do not have to wait for scheduled classes, classmates, or seminars, you complete the 11 modules of coursework in your own time, at your preferred pace.

Do I need to submit TEFL assignments?

All of your online TEFL course assignments are self-contained within your learning portal. At the end of each module, you’ll be tested on the knowledge gained during the most recent topic.

Level 5 assessments will include a mix of multiple-choice and essay-style questions. At the end of your course, your exam assessor will review your open ended questions and answers, and contact you if any re-assessment is required. This is common on a Level 5 TEFL qualification.

Will I have a personal TEFL tutor?

All trainee TEFL teachers will have a personal tutor to help them with academic queries. Your personal TEFL tutor will be assigned to you one or two days after course enrollment, you will have their direct email address so that you can contact them when you need support throughout your course.

Your personal tutor may be a different person from your academic assessor, who will be responsible for marking your TEFL course assessments.

I'd definitely recommend Premier to others, everything is very organized and the curriculum is perfectly paced for self-studying.There's a... quiz after every module and most of the questions are open-ended, so it's quite a lot of work, but it's worth it, because since it's required to pass all of the assessments to get the certificate it means that the certificate itself is of high quality. And aside from the certificate, the material was very helpful and got me to improve on my teaching skills by applying what I learn in class.Upon reflecting on it I realize that the teaching techniques I'd developed on my own through time and experience were already mentioned in the course, so I'd imagine that the new things I learned in a few hours just by taking the course would've taken me years to learn on my own from experience. But there's one problem.. They don't mention at the begining that you have to pay 53$ for the digital certificate, just to get the PDF. It's really annoying finiding out like that at the end of the course, but if you already know before purcahsing the course then it's not as bad, so make sure you add 53$ to the price of every course you might consider when you're browsing, just generally add an extra 53$ to your budget before getting into anything.read more
