Course Syllabus

The 120 hour course has been created to provide you with real, comprehensive knowledge of everything you need to become a confident, influential TEFL teacher. The 10 modules introduce you to the key elements of TEFL teaching, from the role of the teacher to understanding the main principles of teaching writing and speaking skills. The modules have been specifically coordinated to be engaging, accessible and intuitive, with real-life classroom examples and quizzes to review your learning.
  • Module 1: Introduction to TEFL
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • have greater awareness of how English is used as a global language today.
    • be aware of different English language learner motivations and needs.
    • know about historic and current ELT theories, methods and approaches and the influence these have had on current trends in ELT practices.
    • be familiar with learner levels and competencies, with reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).


  • Module 2: The role of the teacher
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • have greater awareness of what is involved in being an effective ELT teacher.
    • learn a range of practical classroom management techniques.
    • learn and begin to develop a range of teaching techniques.
    • have greater awareness of how to adapt your teaching to cater for different teaching contexts.


  • Module 3: Organising and managing learning
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • have greater awareness of different lesson planning considerations.
    • understand the different aspects of lesson planning including setting lesson plan aims and considering your class profile.
    • be able to structure a detailed lesson plan using different lesson plan models for different lesson types.
    • have greater awareness of how to use a syllabus or timetable to structure a series of lessons.
    • have considered how to use a variety of materials and resources effectively.


  • Module 4: Teaching grammar
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • understand what is meant by the term ‘grammar’.
    • understand decisions made about which grammar to teach to certain learner levels.
    • understand arguments for and against the teaching grammar.
    • have reviewed historical approaches to teaching grammar and current trends.
    • have a better understanding of the English grammar system.
    • understand different approaches to presenting grammar.
    • be aware of accuracy-focused and fluency-focused ways of practising grammar.


  • Module 5: Teaching vocabulary
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • understand the importance of teaching vocabulary.
    • be better aware of what is involved in knowing a word and how words are learned and organised.
    • be better aware of different aspects of English vocabulary, including lexical chunks.
    • be aware of different ways of presenting vocabulary and lexical chunks.
    • be aware of different ways of practising vocabulary.
    • understand the importance of recording and recycling vocabulary.


  • Module 6: Teaching pronunciation
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • understand some of the challenges learners may face with English pronunciation.
    • have an understanding of how what is involved in producing sounds, words and longer utterances.
    • be aware of different phonological features.
    • be aware of different activities and techniques which can be used in class to teach and practice pronunciation.


  • Module 7: Teaching receptive skills
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • understand the difference between receptive and productive skills and what is involved in being an effective reader or listener.
    • understand the main principles of teaching reading and listening skills.
    • know how to stage a reading or listening comprehension activity.
    • understand the importance of extensive reading and listening outside class.


  • Module 8: Teaching productive skills
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • understand what is involved in being an effective writer or speaker.
    • understand the main principles of teaching writing and speaking skills.
    • know how to stage writing or speaking activities.
    • be familiar with a range of writing and speaking activities.


  • Module 9: Teaching English for different purposes
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • have reviewed the different reasons students are learning English today.
    • have a greater awareness of how to adapt your teaching to teach very young learners, young learners and teenagers.
    • be more aware of different English language examinations available and how to adapt your teaching to teach examination classes.
    • understand how to adapt your teaching to teach Business English and English for Specific Purposes.


  • Module 10: From course to classroom
    By the end of this module, you will:

    • be more aware of how to plan for your first teaching job.
    • be aware of how to build up a ‘tool kit’ of resources.
    • be better aware of how you can develop professionally.
    • be aware of different ways of improving your teaching.
