“I would absolutely recommend the Anglo-TEFL scholarship to others as a means to upskill and gain valuable teaching experience.”

Iain Carson is a trained mathematician and statistician from Warington in the UK. He loved teaching English with our partners at Angloville so much that he undertook three different programs, including the Anglo-TEFL Scholarship. The Scholarship gives you 120 hours of accredited TEFL training plus over 130 hours of observed teaching practice. Thanks to Anglo-TEFL, Iain’s now been to over 40 countries and gained an incredible amount of travel and teaching experience. Here’s what he had to tell us about it.

What’s one thing that everyone should know about you?

I love hiking and travelling. In fact, I have now been to 40 countries, in part due to the Anglo-TEFL experience!

What career did you have before you decided to get into TEFL and why did you decide to make the change to teaching English abroad?

I trained as a mathematician and statistician, but I decided to embark on a career in TEFL in order to travel and teach at the same time!

How did you find out about the Anglo-TEFL Scholarship program?

When I was teaching English in Spain, a colleague suggested the Anglo-TEFL scholarship to me as a means for professional development.

What tips can you give people who want to teach English in Romania, Hungary or Poland?

If you go to Romania, ensure you hop over the Carpathian Mountains into the region of Transylvania!

What was the best part of your program?

The best part of the program was acting as a dedicated mentor to particular students, guiding their progress with a variety of aspects of English, and in particular their presentation skills.

What was the biggest challenge?

Having previously taught English in classroom settings, the biggest challenge for me was adjusting to one-to-one teaching. What helped in this regard was the Angloville approach of mixing one-to-one teaching with larger group activities.

What are you planning to do now that you’ve completed this program?

My intention now is to continue working as a teacher, while also branching out into the editing of academic work written in English.

Would you recommend this program to others?

I would absolutely recommend the Anglo-TEFL scholarship to others as a means to upskill and gain valuable teaching experience.
