How should I prepare for a TEFL interview?

Planning is key for your upcoming TEFL interview! Go back over your application and take note of important points.

Learn facts about the country, school, teaching styles and the local culture. The most important thing is to know what your potential employer is looking for (this is usually outlined in the job description).

The majority of TEFL interviews happen online through video calling, usually on Skype. Make sure to present your best self (from the waist upwards at least) in a quiet environment (interviews happening from Starbucks never go well).

Our best advice is to be relaxed, smile and make eye contact, prepare some questions to ask at the end, and enjoy speaking with a fellow enthusiastic educator.

Here are some examples of interview questions from our Job Hunter’s Guide:

  • Why do you want to teach?
  • Do you think you could use your previous work experience in TEFL and how?
  • Did you enjoy your TEFL training course? Why?
  • What were the key things you learned from it?
  • Why are you applying for this job?
  • Have you ever lived abroad?

You may be asked to prepare a lesson plan, read our insider guide to preparing the best lesson plans.
