A short (low-cost) flight northwest of the capital city Phnom Penh lies Siem Reap. Immerse yourself in Khmer lifestyle in the cultural tourist mecca of Cambodia. This area is world famous for its UNESCO heritage site, Angkor Wat Temple and many more fascinating temples at Siem Reap, attracting thousands of visitors every day.

Most try to capture this landmark at dawn or dusk for the most picturesque views and can spend up to three days exploring the ancient ruins. Now one of the most popular destinations for TEFL teachers looking for an unspoilt Asian experience, Cambodia has everything to offer.

Based in the busy town of Siem Reap you’ll fill your leisure time with exploring historic buildings and architecture, learning about the impact of the Khmer Rouge and sampling tasty cuisine while browsing all the market stalls offering every kind of souvenir possible. Due to the famous nearby temples Siem Reap has a thriving nightlife filled with international visitors. Weekend getaways to Sihanoukville beach are perfect for chill-out time.

Beginning with a guided orientation about living and teaching in Cambodia, you’ll get an introduction to the country’s recent history, language and culture.  This is also the perfect time for you to get a sense of what to expect when you begin teaching and what your school expects of you.

Your teaching experience

You’ll be based in a school during your TEFL experience in Siem Reap and you’ll enjoy weekends off to sightsee. Most placements will involve teaching students with a range of ages and English ability, generally beginner to intermediate levels.

You can typically expect to teach for up to 25 contact hours per week, plus some preparation time to lesson plan following the school curriculum. Classes take place throughout the day with a few hours break around lunchtime and again in the afternoon. Your goal as an English teacher on this internship will be focused on conversational English practice with written and listening skills important too.

Please note on exact placement location, almost everyone is placed in one area

  • Siem Reap

Outside the classroom

On this TEFL experience you’ll be spoilt for choice during your leisure time. Close to Siem Reap you’ll be able to find natural waterfalls to explore, Tonlé Sap Lake, the floating village and nearby mountains.

Most teachers on this experience visit pub street on weekends and take in the vibrant and bustling nightlife of Siem Reap. Local Khmer food is very affordable if you’d like to dine out on your days off. Cambodia offers amazing opportunities for visitors to learn about its fascinating history and culture.

As this is an unpaid TEFL experience you’ll need to budget for living essentials and spending money for excursions and weekend travel separately. It’s important to know the cost of living in Cambodia is extremely cheap, a local English teacher can expect to earn just $250USD per month.

When budgeting your spending money, remember all meals are included plus you’ll be placed in rent-free private-room accommodation in a Khmer style housing with other teachers.

“Standing in front of a class of children, I expected there to be a lot of unrest and rude students, but what I got was a class of eager, smiling Cambodian children looking at ‘Teacher Chloe.’

Coming from a country where children are spoilt and teachers do not always receive the respect they deserve, it was amazing to see this coming from the students in Cambodia.” — Chloe, TEFL intern in Cambodia
