Teacher Training

Before you start your exciting new life in Hong Kong, we recommend taking a minimum of 120 hours of TEFL training, to fully prepare you for success as an English teacher abroad.

Learn the key techniques of teaching English through total language submersion as well as develop your skills and understand what’s expected of you.

Your 21-day arrival orientation is spent settling into Hong Kong life and culture as well as preparing for success in the classroom.

After your initial week of localization, setting up your bank account and mastering public transport you’ll dive into workshops in classroom management, lesson planning and develop your teaching skills for the upcoming semester.

Week three will see you put into practice all of the training you’ve so far received with some real learners.

Experience camaraderie with fellow newly-arrived teachers and share hints and tips on what went well (or what to avoid) as you prepare to move confidently into your own classroom.

Location

After you settle in, you will spend the academic year teaching in one of various locations.

What do you need to organize?

  • International flights: You’ll need return flights (can be two one-way flights)

  • Budget: Spending money for your first month plus excursions etc.

  • Police check: You’ll need a clean criminal record

  • Visa cost: You’ll have support to obtain your visa. Ask our team before applying if your home country is eligible for the correct visa.

  • Health check: You’ll need to provide a health statement

  • Insurance: It’s really important to sort your travel and health before you go!

  • Vaccines: Consult your local doctor for advice

Your Teaching Experience

During your five-day working week, you’ll clock up 40 contracted hours split between face-to-face teaching, helping improve students’ conversational English, reading, creative writing, listening, grammar and exam preparation.

You will provide high-energy learning experiences that include taking part during fun excursions and events for your students who will be 6 – 21 years old.

Placed in a primary, secondary schools or colleges, a typical working week consists of two days off – Saturday and Sunday.

During the academic year some special events are held on weekends, teachers who are requested to attend receive the time in lieu.

Couples and friends are welcome to apply; we recommend applying early as placement together is based on availability
