Getting there

All qualified applicants will fly into São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport. You’ll be briefed on making the transfer downtown where you’ll be picked up.

What do you need to organize?

  • International flights: You’ll need return flights (can be two one-way)
  • Police check: You’ll need a clean criminal record
  • Health check: You’ll need to provide a health statement
  • Vaccines: Consult your local doctor for advice
  • Budget: Spending money for your first month plus excursions etc
  • Visa cost: Graduates can now apply by enrolling on an online teaching course locally with 50% funding. The R$250,00 balance, around $75 is payable in Brazil. Applicants with UK passports will need to budget £465.
  • Insurance: It’s really important to sort your travel and health before you go!

Your teaching experience

Placed in an English school, your role will be teaching mostly beginners English and placement schools typically cater for Brazilians who’ve never been exposed to English lessons previously. Student ages range from primary level to adults up to 30 years.

You can typically expect to teach up to 26 contact hours weekly, plus 4 hours for lesson preparation time on a Monday – Saturday schedule.

Your goal as an English teacher on this placement is to set strong foundations for these new English learners and to inspire them to want to learn more.

Outside the classroom

Living with a host family will mean you’ll fully experience local life.

You can expect to get the best insider hints and tips on where you should eat, places to visit and best activities to do that are off main tourist trails.

Take advantage of the free Portuguese lessons included in this teaching internship and maximize your cultural soakage.

Aside from hitting the beach during leisure time you can try some samba dancing or visit some of the city’s bohemian nightlife.

If a cocktail is more your thing, you’ll find trendy sky bars complete with rooftop pool to take in the amazing vistas.

It is important to be respectful to your host family during your stay and when you plan to do some travel on your days off, keep them informed so that they won’t worry.


Since Brazil has much lower living costs compared to Western standards, your monthly living allowance of 1100 Brazilian Real (BRL) will afford you a comfortable social life. From your allowance, 300 Brazilian Real (BRL) (US$90/€75/£66) is deducted monthly for housing.

When budgeting your money, remember you’ll be placed in a homestay with a local family.
