With 400 miles of Atlantic coastline just a short distance away, this placement in Southeastern Brazil is calling beachcombers for the surf, swimming or sunbathing. Beginning with your arrival orientation about local customs, culture and teaching English living Brazil you’ll feel like a local quickly. Your family homestay accommodation is central to this internship and the week-long orientation is the perfect chance to learn how to be a great house guest.

Internship requirements

  • Aged between 18 – 30 years old (if a student). Graduates can be older
  • Fluent or native English speaker
  • Be enrolled as a current university student or degree holder
  • TEFL qualified (included)
  • To be physically and mentally fit

How it works

Before you go, you’ll have an application form to fill out, a video chat, submit all your documents (including a recorded mini mock lesson) and then you’ll be on your way to Brazil.

Getting there

All qualified applicants will fly into São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport. You’ll be briefed on making the transfer downtown where you’ll be picked up.

What do you need to organize?

  • International flights: You’ll need return flights (can be two one-way)
  • Police check: You’ll need a clean criminal record
  • Health check: You’ll need to provide a health statement
  • Vaccines: Consult your local doctor for advice
  • Budget: Spending money for your first month plus excursions etc
  • Visa cost: You’ll have support to obtain your visa, it’s usually a visa requirement that you’re a current university student. However graduates can now apply by enrolling on an online teaching course locally with 50% funding. The R$250,00 balance, around $75 is payable in Brazil. Applicants with UK passports will need to budget £465.
  • Travel insurance: It’s really important to sort yours before you travel!

Your teaching experience

Placed in an English school, your role will be teaching mostly beginners English and placement schools typically cater for Brazilians who’ve never been exposed to English lessons previously. Student ages range from primary level to adults up to 30 years.

You can typically expect to teach up to 26 contact hours weekly, plus 4 hours for lesson preparation time on a Monday – Saturday schedule. Your goal as an English teacher on this placement is to set strong foundations for these new English learners and to inspire them to want to learn more.

You’ll be fully prepared for students as you’ll receive all the training you need through your TEFL course before you leave. With a 30 hour specialist preparation course included for teaching young learners (TYL), you’ll master your lessons quickly.

Outside the classroom

Living with a host family will mean you’ll fully experience local life. You can expect to get the best insider hints and tips on where you should eat, places to visit and best activities to do that are off main tourist trails. Take advantage of the free Portuguese lessons included in this teaching internship and maximize your cultural soakage.

Aside from hitting the beach during leisure time you can try some samba dancing or visit some of the city’s bohemian nightlife. If a cocktail is more your thing, you’ll find trendy sky bars complete with rooftop pool to take in the amazing vistas.

It is important to be respectful to your host family during your stay and when you plan to do some travel on your days off, keep them informed so that they won’t worry.

Brazil’s capital, Rio de Janeiro is a short 45 min flight from São Paulo, while in this part of the world, experiencing this city is a must-do. Don’t forget to plan time for it.


Since Brazil has much lower living costs compared to Western standards, your monthly living allowance of 800 Brazilian Real (BRL) will afford you a very comfortable social life.

When budgeting your money, remember you’ll be placed in a homestay with a local family.
