Life as a local in Spain

“Hello! My name is Meghan. I am 27 years old, and I made the decision to move from Atlanta to Sant Vicenç dels Horts in late January 2015. I recently developed an interest in education, and I have always had a thirst for travelingIt is not easy to move halfway across the world to a country where you do not know anyone and you do not speak the language(s), but I have been welcomed with open arms. I am so happy that I took the leap and decided to come, because it has been a positive and life changing experience.”

“I would like to share my time here in La Salle Manre-sa. It’s been an incredible experience and it’s difficult to know where to start describing my time here,Having never taught before, or lived outside my hometown before, and considering myself a little bit of an introvert, the thought of all these changes was both exciting and terrifying. Any fears I had were vanished in moments from the welcoming manner of everyone here at La Salle Manresa.”

“My name is Adam Pickus and I am an English Conversation Assistant at Col-legi Virolai in the city of Molins De Rei, located near Barcelona. I am from San Francisco, California, in the United States and I come from a very different culture in the United States. Through the duration of this program I have an incredible dual-cultural perspective that few are fortunate enough to have.”

Where in Spain

Whether you’re placed in Valencia or Catalonia, teaching English in Spain is an increíble adventure unlike any other. Interns in Catalonia – the beautiful northeast of Spain- are able to visit the spectacular beaches of the Costa Dorada, Costa Barcelona and Costa Brava, and sample the local cuisine (such as ‘pa amba tomàquet’, i.e. bread with tomato) in some of the best restaurants in the world. Meanwhile, a visit to Valencia would be incomplete without stopping off in El Carmen, the old town; this area is home to the cathedral, art deco food market, ceramics museum and full of small bars, tapas joints and clubs.

On your arrival, you will be picked up at the airport before being transferred to your local family. Essentially, the role of the Conversation Assistant in the school is to aid teaching and student communication in English. Duties will vary from school to school, but will include assisting a whole class, along with a main teacher, with the children’s dictation, reading, and giving presentations explaining about their own country, culture, customs, and so on.

Teaching & sharing skills

If interns have any other skills or passions, for example music, theatre or sports, the school may incorporate these into the school environment. Placements vary from reputable, professional Spanish infant, primary, secondary, A-level and technical schools in Catalonia and Valencia. While placements will depend on the school and the location, interns can expect to teach children between the ages of 3 and 16. A working week typically runs Monday to Friday, with 25 hours of classroom time weekly.

Living with the locals

By living with a local family rather than other travelers, you have a real opportunity to get an authentic, first-hand cultural experience when outside of the classroom. Living with a host family provides support in a safe environment and gives everyone the opportunity to practice and improve their language skills; interns can learn and practice Spanish in the relaxing, low pressured atmosphere of the family home!

You can get paid to travel, live and work in Spain sooner than you think.
