Step 1: Getting qualified for a TEFL job.
The first and most important thing to begin with is getting your qualification. You will need a TEFL / TESOL certificate which you can either get in a classroom which takes up loads of time to prepare and organize, or right now from our Premier TEFL Courses page and get started right away! No matter what you do you will have to learn all the right techniques of teaching English as a foreign language. Before anyone even considers you for a TEFL posting you will need to prove that you have some competence in teaching the language accredited by an approved organisation which we can provide for you.
Step 2: Start the application process and get that Resume ready!
Here is the part where you decide on where to try applying for. Where you end up depends on a lot of things like demand for TEFL teachers, your own desire to explore new countries as well as budget and accessibility. That being said, TEFL teaching jobs can be found almost anywhere in the world and you have plenty of choice on where to go. Whatever you do, always ensure that your resume looks good and is up to date to make sure you have the best possible chance to impress a teaching organisation overseas. Having a list of your qualifications, experience, photos and reference letters ready couldn’t hurt either.
Step 3: Getting interviewed
English teaching interviews will mostly be by phone or Skype to save on travelling between countries for the sake of one interview. Though it can be done in a more comfortable place, it’s still important to present yourself in a positive light. Always be polite and speak with confidence over the phone, and if on a video call dress well and speak in the same polite and confident way. Some employers might ask you to complete a workshop or their own standard course just to make sure you are capable enough for the job while others will ask a lot of questions about your previous experience in the workplace or in learning environments. It’s important to relax, get used to speaking online, and maybe even practice a few times with a friend just to feel more comfortable with the setting. If you don’t receive an offer you shouldn’t give up! The market can be competitive but you can feel confident in your abilities with a Premier TEFL qualification.
Step 4: Get ready for your adventure!
When you apply for TEFL jobs and receive an offer let’s say from Europe or Asia you will probably receive a contract by post before leaving your home country. The time between signing the contract and setting off to start can be very short so it’s best to be well prepared for all occasions. Have your passport, Visa and any other relevant documents like vaccination records all up to date and accounted for. EU members won’t need a Visa to live and work in another EU country but if in doubt you can check any Visa requirements you may need online.
One good idea is to get your visa sorted before booking any flights, just to be sure. Take your time, do your research and get ready to set out on an adventure into the world of Premier TEFL.
