Meet Jonathan, a Premier TEFL graduate whose journey to Taiwan turned into a life-changing adventure. After completing our TEFL course, Jonathan fell in love with teaching and headed to Taiwan for what he thought would be a temporary teaching stint. Five years later, he’s still there—now a permanent resident—thanks to his deep love for teaching and the vibrant island life. Dive into Jonathans story to get inspired:

As I reflect on the past five years of teaching English in Taiwan, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences, challenges, and unforgettable memories I’ve accumulated. This journey has not only shaped me as a teacher but has also deepened my appreciation for this incredible island. Here’s a glimpse into my teaching experience and the reasons why I’ve fallen in love with Taiwan.

My Teaching Experience

When I first arrived in Taiwan, I was both excited and nervous. I secured a position at a private language school, where I taught students ranging from young children to teens. Each class presented unique challenges and opportunities for growth. Over the years, I’ve adapted my teaching style, learning to incorporate more interactive activities and culturally relevant materials that resonate with my students.

Witnessing their progress and enthusiasm has been immensely rewarding. I’ve also had the opportunity to mentor new teachers, sharing insights and strategies to help them navigate their own teaching experience .

Reasons I’ve Fallen in Love with Taiwan

The Amazing People

The warmth and kindness of the Taiwanese people have made my experience truly special. From my colleagues to my students, I’ve formed deep connections that go beyond the classroom. The support  I’ve found in the expat community has also enriched my life, providing a network of friends who share similar experiences.

Taiwan’s Nature

Taiwan is a paradise for nature lovers. With stunning mountains, lush jungles, and breathtaking coastlines, I’ve enjoyed countless weekends hiking and exploring. My favorite spot is Taipingshan Mountain, where the forests are covered in fog, creating an eerie experience.

The Culture and Traditions

Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage is evident in its festivals, arts, and everyday life. Celebrating events like Chinese New Year and Ghost Festival has given me a deeper understanding of Taiwanese traditions. I love participating in local customs, such as  joining in the vibrant street parades for the local deities, or experiencing Chinese New Year  with my local friends.

The Food

Taiwanese cuisine is a culinary adventure that never ceases to amaze me. From the delicious street food at night markets to the comforting flavors of home-cooked meals, every bite tells a story. My favorite dishes are beef noodle soup and drink is bubble tea, but I’m constantly discovering new dishes to enjoy. Sharing meals with friends has become a cherished part of my experience.

My Students

Perhaps the greatest joy of teaching in Taiwan has been the incredible students I’ve had the privilege to work with. Their eagerness to learn and their unique perspectives make every class enjoyable. I’ve seen many of them grow from shy speakers to confident speakers, and knowing that I played a part in their journey is a humbling achievement.

Reflecting on these past five years, I can honestly say that teaching English in Taiwan has transformed my life. The connections I’ve made, the experiences I’ve had, and the personal growth I’ve achieved have all contributed to a fulfilling chapter that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Taiwan has not only been a place of work but a home filled with warmth, and adventure. I look forward to many more years of exploration and discovery on this beautiful island!
