Alexandra is a Psychology and Counselling graduate originally from Corfu, Greece, who decided to make a change from working in mental health to teaching English abroad. She completed the Anglo-TEFL Scholarship, a program that we’ve established with our partners Angloville that enables English speakers to combine a TEFL qualification with practical experience teaching English in the beautiful countryside of Poland, Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Here we learn more about Alexandra’s experience in Poland.

What’s one thing that everyone should know about you?

I am not a native English speaker, however I have been living in England over the past 5 years now and I very much enjoyed teaching English as a foreign language for Angloville in Poland. I love travelling and learning new languages. I speak fluent Greek, English and French.

What career did you have before you decided to get into TEFL and why did you decide to make the change to teaching English abroad?

I recently graduated in Psychology and Counselling and before the Anglo-TEFL program I was working in mental health. I chose to teach English because I wanted to see more of the world and work with all sorts of different people. I wanted to share my experience of learning English with others and show them that everything is possible!

What tips can you give people who want to teach English in Poland?

I loved my experience in Poland. In both cities Warsaw and Wroclaw, I found nice food and places to visit. I loved Wroclaw’s architecture. On my last day there I visited the zoo and I would suggest avoiding it during the winter months as temperatures are quite low and even many of the animals are not kept outside in this weather. However, it was a lovely experience.

What was the best part of the Anglo-TEFL Scholarship program?

The best part of the program was the people I met and the places I stayed. There was a great bonding with all the participants of the program, both the native speakers and the Polish students. We had an awesome time at the venues during the week, we did many activities indoors and outdoors, and I learnt a lot about the Polish culture and history.

What are you planning to do now that you’ve completed the Anglo-TEFL Scholarship?

Potentially, in the near future, I would like to become an English teacher somewhere in Asia as I have been to Thailand once before, and would like to see more of that part of the world.

Would you recommend the Anglo-TEFL Scholarship to others?

Yes absolutely. It is certainly a great experience to start as an English teacher and makes teaching seem a very relaxing and enjoyable activity. Through the program, I’ve learnt how to approach students with alternative methods of teaching and it didn’t feel like a job at all. I would recommend it to anyone who’s not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and change their careers and lives.
